CRE backlink analysis: which links actually help a real estate firm
"We have 2,000 backlinks" sounds impressive until you look at where they come from.
Why generic backlink tools mislead CRE firms
Generic SEO tools report authority and volume. Neither tells a CRE firm whether a link means anything to the audience it wants. A link from a national news site with no real estate context does less for "industrial space for lease in Dallas" than a mention in a regional CRE publication with a tenth of the traffic.
What the analysis scores
- CRE relevance — is the linking site about real estate, business or your market?
- Toxicity — link farms, expired-domain networks, unrelated foreign-language spam and other patterns that can actively hurt you.
- Profile shape — how much of your authority rests on a handful of domains, and where the gaps are against competitors.
In a recent scan for a client, 166 referring domains scored as only four CRE-relevant sources. The count looked healthy; the relevance did not.
Where CRE links actually come from
- Local and regional business journals covering transactions
- CRE trade publications and market-report roundups
- Industry associations and designations (CCIM, SIOR, BOMA, NAIOP)
- Chambers of commerce and economic development organisations
- Tenant, developer and lender partners who publish case studies

How many backlinks does a commercial real estate firm need?
There is no useful number. Relevance and trust decide the value: ten links from CRE publications, associations and local business journals typically do more than a hundred from directories. Judge a profile by which domains link to you, not how many.
What is a toxic backlink?
A link from a site that exists to manipulate rankings — link farms, private blog networks, expired domains repurposed for links, or unrelated spam. A small number is normal and harmless; a concentration can hurt, and those links should be reviewed and disavowed.
How do I get backlinks for a CRE firm?
Publish market data journalists can cite, get transactions covered in the local business journal, contribute to CRE trade publications, keep association and designation profiles current, and co-publish case studies with partners. Each of those is a link a model and a search engine both treat as relevant.
Does DeshTEK check competitors' backlinks too?
Yes. The same relevance and toxicity scoring runs against named competitors, so you can see which CRE-relevant sources link to them and not to you.
